Award Winning Recipes from the Fair

I thought I would include the recipes that recieved awards in the Porterville Fair.

Orange Rolls-1st place entry

1/2 Cup sugar
1 cube of butter
1 orange, grated rind
2 cans Pillsbury biscuit (or refrigerator biscuit dough)

Melt butter and sugar together. Add orange rind. Place biscuits verstically in bundt pan. Pour sauce over the biscuits. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes.


Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookies- 1st place entry

1 cup raisins
1 cup water
Simmer raisins in water until plump (approximately 20 minutes). Drain liquid into cup and add enough water to make 1/2 cup.

3/4 cup soft shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar (1 cup brown and 1/2 cup white)
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup raisin liquid
2 1/2 cup flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup nuts, chopped

Cream shortening, sugar, eggs, and vanilla together and stir in raisin liquid. Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and spices together. Stir in oats, nuts and raisins. Drop by teaspoon full on ungreased cookie sheet . (We made ours a little bigger, but back in the day, the really small cookies were traditional). Bake 8-10 minutes or until golden brown on the bottom at 400 degrees.

Lemon Bread (2nd Place at the Porterville Fair)

6 Tbsp butter or margarine
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 1/2 cup flour
1 tsp baking powder
pinch salt
1 lemon, grated rind
1/2 cup walnuts, optional

Cream butter and sugar together. Blend in eggs. Add milk and dry ingredients alternately. Mix well then add lemon rind and nuts. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour in generously greased and dusted loaf pan.

Lemon juice
1/2 cup sugar
Brush lemon juice over loaf while it is warm. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup sugar. Allow to cool thouroughly before slicing.
